Excavation near Moyle Big revealed castle ditches, a medieval lime kiln and about a thousand ceramic sherds dating from the 12th to 14th century. The road was being built when the dig happened, so the place gave up its shape in a narrow window of haste and care. Someone lived there, broke cups, burned lime and marked the earth with purpose.

Partially excavated in advance of construction of the N9/N10 Kilcullen-Waterford Road (Excavation Licence number E2595), a series of ditches probably associated with the castle (CW007-051----) to the S were uncovered. Large assemblages (c. 1000 sherds) of ceramic artefacts dating to the 12th- 14th century were found. A medieval lime kiln (CW007-141----) was also uncovered.
