What is recorded here
Located on a grass-covered coastal promontory (int. dims. c. 43m N-S; c. 12-18m E-W) that is defended on the landward side to the N by a fosse (Wth of top 13.4m; Wth of base 4.4m; int. D 3.8m), a central bank (Wth 7m; H over the inner fosse 5.9m; H over outer fosse 3.1m) and an outer fosse (Wth of top 9.2m; Wth of base 2.9m; ext. D 4.1m). Outer earthworks marked on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map had been levelled by 1906 (Westropp 1906, 252). The entrance through the bank was created in the late 19th century, when an inner stone bank may have been removed (Westropp 1914-16, 218-19). A field bank (max. int. H 1.6m at W) surrounds all sides of the promontory. Within the defences are two possible hut sites (int. dims. 5.2m x 4.1m; 7.8m x 6.9m) visbile as sunken areas, but a stone with a possible ogham inscription, described by Westropp (1906, 250) and now missing, is probably a plough-marked stone. A possible Man-made underground passage was described by Westropp as blocked with stones (ibid. 250), but its hollow is still visible.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
