Enclosure in Marybrook

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Marybrook holds no visible enclosure because repeated ploughing erased the ringfort Bowman recorded on Thomas Hennessy's land. The field gave up its shape, not its memory. What remains is a absent marker, waiting for someone to stop measuring and imagine the circle beneath the soil.
Bowman (1934, 411) recorded levelled ringfort on Thomas Hennessy's land, in field which has been 'ploughed many times...no sign now remains'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
