Enclosure in Coolcon

In pasture, on top of a NW-SE ridge, close to break of slope on SW side, with extensive views over broad expanse of grassland; the Partry Mountains define the horizon at W. Not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; shown on the 25-inch plan as a circular hachured enclosure (diam. c. 20m) and on the 1915 OS 6-inch edition as a semi-circular hachured area bordered on the straight side at SE by a field boundary. Originally circular, the SE half of this enclosure has been leveled. The remains now consist of a low, roughly D-shaped platform (18.7m NE-SW; 10m NW-SE) defined on curving side at SSW−NE by a dilapidated earthen scarp (H 0.5-0.7m). The straight side to SE is bordered by the remnants of a stony field bank that has been removed elsewhere in the field. A single hawthorn tree grows on the scarp at NNW. The platform has an uneven surface and the enclosing scarp is rather irregular and degraded. A cluster of six boulders rests on the E half of the platform -this appears to be a random arrangement, possibly the result of field clearance. A low scarp (Wth 0.6m; H 0.4m) extends from the cluster of boulders across the centre of the platform on a NNW−SSE axis, marking a change in interior ground level, with a marked slope down to E from here. The W-facing slope of the ridge, c. 4m W of the enclosure, is artificially scarped, with traces of stone facing. This is probably a 19th century field boundary.
