Fartamore Castle in ruins — Report the wrong picture

Fartamore Castle stood in a wide Galway valley in 1574 under James Brimingham, its almost square tower rising three storeys before time broke it open. The north-west corner has collapsed entirely, yet the east wall still hides a chute for private waste and the top edge holds the ghost of a lost stone vault. A detached bawn wall stretches west and north like an abandoned sentence, waiting for rooms that never returned.

In a wide shallow valley beside a river. In existence in 1574 when it was in the possession of 'James Brimingham [sic]' (Nolan 1901b, 117). A poorly preserved almost square tower (L 11.2m, Wth 10.6m) now three storeys high; the NW corner has completely collapsed and there are several breaches in the walls. The springing of an arch at the top of E wall indicates the former presence of a stone vault. Few architectural features survive, however, a breach in E wall exposes the garderobe exit chute on 1st floor, and a wall-cupboard is visible within a broken embrasure in N wall. Some 4m W of SW corner, a bawn wall extends W for 5m and then turns N for c. 23m; no visible surface trace of N, E or S walls survive. There are earthworks (GA016-053002-) to W and NW.
