Embanked enclosure

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Embanked enclosure is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Lisgillalea, County Roscommon, Ireland. It appeared as a circular embanked enclosure about fifty metres wide on the 1837 Ordnance Survey map and remains visible only as a thirty-metre cropmark in aerial photographs because the bank has vanished from the level cereal field.
Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 50m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and situated on a level landscape. It is visible as a cropmark (diam. c. 30m) defined by a bank feature on vertical aerial photographs (GSIAP: M217-6; OSAP: 2000), but is not visible at ground level in a cereal crop.
