Ecclesiastical enclosure in Gortmorris

Ecclesiastical enclosure

What is recorded here

On a low knoll in pastureland. Poorly preserved oval enclosure (NW-SE 80m, NE-SW 65m) defined by a low earthen bank from W to NE, and elsewhere by a degraded scarp. An external fosse is present from SE to WNW. There is a possible entrance (Wth 5m) at SE and field boundaries cut the monument at N, S and W. The interior is pitted with a number of hollows, the northernmost of which contains a holy well (GA007-068002-). According to local tradition, there was a monastery here and human bones are said to have been found close to the well. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
