Dundonald Cemetery

Donall’s Fortress became Dundonald Cemetery in 1905 when Belfast needed room for its growing dead. The County Down railway still runs at the rear, now a greenway, and a frightened horse once broke three tomb railings before it was stopped. Black and gold gates admit visitors past grass paths and a tall limestone cross where bronze swords meet like Excalibur. John Carey, Sir Thomas Dixon, Lady Edith Stewart Dixon and others rest among the plots, their names kept alive in stone.
