Downpatrick Head is a prominent headland in County Mayo, composed mainly of basalt formed during the Paleogene period, around 60 to 55 million years ago. The rock formed from ancient volcanic activity associated with the opening of the North Atlantic, and the area is notable for its dramatic coastal scenery and archaeological sites, including a 6th-century monastic settlement.
