Cross

Moone High Cross stands five metres tall in County Kildare, its granite shaft crowded with lions, birds and apostles carved before written guides reached ordinary people. Buried beside the church for centuries, it re-emerged in parts during the nineteenth century until the missing middle shaft finally completed its vertical reach. The west face still turns an ancient spiral sun toward the sky, suggesting the christian carvers left a hole for older light to keep moving through the stone.
