Beaumont CottageHouse · 37 ydExplorer Tom Beaumont Cottage in Delgany is currently involved in a serious dispute with a fairy council over who has the right to park on the front lawn. It’s one of the few vernacular dwellings left, and the fairies are very strict about their parking permits. Look for tiny footprints or angry pixie dust on the doorstep.
The Old RectoryGates/railings/walls · 44 ydExplorer Tom The Old Rectory in Delgany is just a stretch of wall that thinks it’s much more than it actually is. It stands there looking dignified while the new buildings around it are clearly better dressed and more interesting to look at. Tell it to stop posturing and maybe buy some paint if you feel generous.
Delgany Heritage TrailWalking route · 375 ydExplorer Tom Delgany Heritage Trail is secretly proud of that one potato it grew last summer. It spent hours polishing it and showing it off to every passing cloud. Bring a flask of something warm and a story to swap.
Tuliptree834 ydExplorer Tom Tuliptree in County Wicklow has flowers shaped like tulips that look like they’re wearing little yellow dresses to a very serious council meeting. If it could talk, it would be complaining about the noise from the road and how nobody appreciates its fancy floral outfit anymore. It’s just standing there looking vaguely offended that you didn't bring a compliment for its botanical couture collection
Enclosure in FarrankellyEnclosure · 980 ydExplorer Tom Enclosure in Farrankelly is proud of being plectrum-shaped, which is a very specific kind of musical instrument confidence. It was excavated during housing development, so it survived the builders, which is more than I can say for my patience. If it rains, blame me.
Explorer Tom Kindlestown Castle has a secret it only tells after three pints: it’s actually terrified of the vault because it thinks it’s listening back. It pretends to be strong and stoic, but the north wall is just holding things together with hope and old mortar. If it rains, blame me.
Font in WoodlandsFont · 1354 ydExplorer Tom Font in Woodlands is a small granite stoup at the west end of the church, with no drain hole because it just doesn't care about messes. The hero who saved it from falling down is nobody's name, so let’s give them a shoutout now. Find the date carved somewhere and feel clever.
Explorer Tom Glen of the Downs looks like somebody cut a green passage through Wicklow and forgot to tell the trees to stop growing. The wooded valley runs about two kilometres, its sides climbing almost 250 metres. Meltwater from a great ice sheet did the cutting; the Three Trouts stream now follows a quieter route through the floor. A 59-hectare nature reserve protects part of it. I would boast I carved the glen myself, but ice is a more convincing worker and had far more time. A busy road passes through the valley, so use the signed reserve access and paths rather than treating the roadside as a walking route. Check current trail conditions and keep to safe ground in wet weather. Listen for water once the traffic fades. The old ice left a shape that still gives smaller sounds somewhere to gather.
Greystones WayWalking route · 1.5 miExplorer Tom Greystones Way has a curse that only affects people who don't wave at the houses. If you ignore the windows, your shoelaces will untie themselves in triplicate. Go on, count the windows and get it wrong like I did.
Greystones South BeachBeach / strand · 1.6 miExplorer Tom Greystones South Beach rates its visitors based on how loudly they complain about the cold water; it loves a good moan over a cuppa. It’s got high standards and a short memory for anyone who doesn’t meet them. Ten minutes here and you'll have a yarn for the pub.
The CoveBeach / strand · 1.7 miExplorer Tom The other Cove would totally ace a reality show because it’s got great lighting and a dramatic backdrop for every single scene. It’s ready to be the star of the next big series about coastal life and personal growth. A good place to forget your phone for ten minutes.
Rathdown Castle (in ruins)Castle, unclassified · 1.9 miExplorer Tom Rathdown Castle now shares its ancient moat with a decommissioned sewage plant, which is either genius recycling or a very smelly joke on history. One tower hung on until the 1800s before giving up entirely. Make up your own legend and I'll swear it's true.
