Crannog in Portanure was a small oval island forty-five metres from the Cavan shore when surveyors marked it in 1836 and 1876. Water has since withdrawn, erasing its boundary and leaving only a clump of vegetation above the reeds. Whatever life moved across that distance no longer has a path, but the lake still holds the shape of the place it swallowed.

Small oval-shaped island (dims. c. 30m ENE-WSW; c. 18m NNW-SSE) marked on OS 1836 and 1876 eds., c. 45m from the shoreline. Water-levels in the lake have dropped considerably and the site is now identifiable only as a clump of vegetation protruding above the reeds.
