Coonagh Castle rose around 1225 as a wedding gift from the Archbishop of Dublin, becoming the administrative heart of Okonagh and a prize in medieval power struggles. Its thick Norman keep still towers above the Cahernahallia River, preserving a spiral staircase, corner rooms and even a projecting latrine from the original design. The castle passed through royal, Grandison and O'Brien hands before serving as a Cromwellian garrison, where soldiers fed their horses and lived inside walls built for display as much as defence.
