What is recorded here

The precise location of the medieval watermill belonging to Coonagh Castle (LI025-002002-) has not been identified. The mill was probably located on the banks of the Cahernahallia River in close proximity to Coonagh Castle. A curving linear earthwork to the S of the castle visible on aerial photographs may be the remains of a mill race belonging to the mill. In 1655 the Civil Survey recorded that in 1640, 'Mortagh Mc Bryne, Irish Papist of Longford' was in possession of 'a mill and a Castle in repaire' at Coonagh (Simington 1938, 18). A deserted medieval settlement (LI025-002001-) appears to have been located in the fields to the E of the Cahernahallia River and Castletown Church (LI025-004001-).
