Coolquill Castle rose five storeys above the Tipperary countryside until men chopped the top off in the 1950s, leaving a stubby sandstone box that still guards its murder-hole and cracked walls. Morish Stoke called it a good castle in 1654, yet it wanted repair then and wants more now, its south angle already collapsed and its stairs twisting through stone like a forgotten thought. The deer park is gone, the bawn faded, but the tower remains stubbornly alive, dropping pieces into the grass whenever the wind or time pulls too hard.
