Cooley Castle

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Site of castle built by James Dowdall c. 1543 and destroyed in the nineteenth century (Tempest 1952b, 77). No visible surface trace.

Cooley Castle, Castletowncooley was built in the early 17th century by the powerful O’Neill family, likely under the direction of Brian O’Neill, Lord of the Pale, as a strategic stronghold in the Cooley Peninsula. It is remembered for its historical association with the O’Neills and its role in the political and military landscape of medieval Ulster.
