What is recorded here

An earthen ringfort stands in Castletowncooley, a sub-circular enclosure thirty metres across with a boulder bank and a narrow gap at the south-west. A modern fence and drystone work have changed its shape, but the oval platform in the north-west quadrant still marks where a hut once stood. People may have lived there, farmed around it, or simply passed it by while believing the fairies owned the ground.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Sub-circular area (int. dims. 30m N-S, 28m E-W) enclosed by earth and boulder bank (Wth 3.5m, H 0.7m internally, 0.9m externally) with entrance gap (Wth 2.2m) at SSW. Oval hut platform (LH008-049004-) in NW quadrant. A modern field fence has been built on top of the bank from NE-E-SSE, while the bank itself is much altered by modern drystone revetment on all sides.
