Clonlard House

Detached three-bay two-storey farmhouse, extant 1875, on a T-shaped plan centred on single-bay single-storey gabled projecting porch to ground floor; three-bay two-storey rear (north) elevation. "Improved", pre-1902, producing present composition. Occupied, 1911. Sold, 1924. Renovated, 2004. Pitched slate roofs including pitched (gabled) slate roof to porch with clay ridge tiles, rendered coping to gables with rendered chimney stacks to apexes having stepped capping supporting terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves retaining cast-iron downpipes. Replacement gritdashed roughcast walls to front (south) elevation bellcast over rendered plinth with rendered quoins to corners; replacement cement rendered surface finish (remainder) with rendered quoins to corners. Square-headed central window opening (ground floor) with concealed dressings framing timber casement window having margins. Square-headed door opening into farmhouse with concealed dressings framing timber panelled door having overlight. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing six-over-six timber sash windows. Interior including (ground floor): central hall retaining timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors; and timber surrounds to door openings to remainder framing timber panelled doors with timber panelled shutters to window openings. Set in landscaped grounds with rendered piers to perimeter supporting replacement iron double gates.

A farmhouse erected by Alexander Illingworth (1803-75) of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, representing an integral component of the mid nineteenth-century domestic built heritage of south County Wexford with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such attributes as the compact rectilinear plan form centred on a somewhat featureless doorcase, albeit one largely concealed by a later porch; the uniform or near-uniform proportions of the openings on each floor; and the high pitched roofline. Having been reasonably well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior: the recent substitution of the slate hung surface finish, however, has not had a beneficial impact on the character or integrity of the composition. Furthermore, adjacent outbuildings (extant 1902) continue to contribute positively to the group and setting values of a neat self-contained ensemble having subsequent connections with the Stott family including Robert Stott MA (1843-1923), 'Farmer' (NA 1911).
