Clogheenavodig

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Clogheenavodig is a standing stone beside the road south from Bandon Distillery, though no surface trace remains visible. The Irish name hints at ancient settlement, while the hidden burial ground suggests people once chose this exact spot to lay their dead beyond formal parish rules. Whatever vanished beneath the soil, the stone still marks the boundary between memory and forgetting.
On W side of road running S from Bandon Distillery (CO110-037---). No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
