Knockroe castle stood on a western bend of the Bandon River, facing Poulnalong Tower House across the water. It belonged to the MacCarthy Riabhach line, who controlled the river approach and watched the eastern bank for danger. The castle has vanished, but the bend still holds the shape of that old rivalry.

Built by the MacCarthy Riabhach family in the 15th or 16th century, Carrighnassig Castle was an important stronghold in the Carbery East region of west Cork. It is remembered as part of the wider network of defensive and residential structures associated with the powerful MacCarthy dynasty during the late medieval period.
