What is recorded here
Dunkelly East, County Cork: a cliff-edge fort where the sea has eaten the northern half, leaving a 22m E-W crescent of bank and fosse above Dunmanus Bay. The stream from the south still forces its way through the eastern ditch to join the water below, as if the fort were never fully closed. People may have lived inside that narrow rim, watched the bay through the gap the sea made, and lost the front room of their house to every storm.
On cliff edge overlooking Dunmanus Bay to N. Northern half of ringfort cut away by sea erosion. Remaining portion (22m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (max. int. H 3.5m) and external fosse (D 0.8m). Stream from S runs into sea through fosse on E side. Interior is level and collapsing along cliff edge. Possible Man-made underground passage (CO138-020002-) in NE quadrant.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
