Knockeens castle stands within a cliff-edge fort above Dunmanus harbour, facing its southern neighbour across the water. The 1842 map captured a rectangular ruin, but grass now smothers a six-metre square on the inner bank, hiding the turret Westropp described. O'Mahoney owned this strange suspended room, perhaps watching boats or simply enjoying the dizzy drop. The sea has taken the walls, leaving only a flat shadow where human hands once shaped stone against the sky.

Within cliff-edge fort (CO139-014001) on N side of Dunmanus harbour; Dunmanus castle (CO139-015---) on S side. Shown on OS 6-inch map (1842) as rectangular structure 'in ruins'. Low grass-covered square area (6.3m NE-SW; 4.4m NW-SE) on inner bank of fort at cliff edge. Westropp (1915, 281) describes this as 'a turret'. O'Mahoney castle (Healy 1988, 201).
