Cist in Turoe

Within the ‘Rath of Feewore’ (GA097-150001-). During the course of an excavation carried out by Knox (1915-16, 192) a small crude cist was found in a cutting through the W side of the bank. It appears that it was lay below the level of the bank. The cist was defined by two thin stones on each side, one at each end and three on the top. Cist in Turoe is a small Neolithic or early Bronze Age burial cist, likely dating to the 2nd millennium BCE. Its presence within a ringfort suggests a possible reuse of earlier sacred or burial sites during the Iron Age.
