Cist in Stephenstown

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Remains of cists discovered during construction work. The only cist which remained intact (L c. 2m, Wth c. 0.4m) was built of slabs laid on edge and covered by several lintels. The cist contained an extended inhumation, aligned E-W, with the head to W. Anatomical examination of all the bone fragments from the site suggest that there were two adult skeletons, one male, the other female (CLAJ 1970, 78).
