Tall bones, bent and forced into a small box, still lie in the old mound opposite Castlekevin. The cist holds a man whose body refused to shrink, marking him as large enough to break the limits of his own grave.

Grove White (1905-25, vol. 2, 105) refers to 'an old mound of earth in the field opposite the stable yard gate [of Castle Kevin]'. Mound was opened to reveal 'a very old coffin containing a human skeleton. It was that of a very tall man, the coffin was much too small for it, and it was evident that the body had been forced into it, the legs being bent.' According to Doody (1986, Cork No. 19), probably a short cist. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
