Church (in Ruins)

NW-of-centre in graveyard (14538), immediately SW of C of I church (14698). Small fragment of limestone-built NW corner (H c. 2.5-3m), with short return of N (L 1.5m) and W (L 1.85m) walls, all that now stands; shown as rectangular ruinous structure (c. 15m WSW-ENE; c. 6m NNW-SSE) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Standing portion of W wall terminates at side of window embrasure; wall backed by monument to Wrixon, dated 1778. Line of wall continued S for 3m as low rubble foundation; 6m S of this again, ground level drops away. Interior of church crowded with 18th/19th century monuments and railed-in grave plots. Remains of parish church of Ballyclogh; a church here listed in Papal Taxation of 1291 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 28-30). Reported 'in ruins' in 1615; in 1694 described as 'much damnified by the Irish in the late war, but since well repaired'; church again 'in repair' in 1774 (ibid.); account published in 1815 (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 1, 148) mentions 'a small spire...lately added'.
