What is recorded here
On a slight rise which has been augmented by accumulation of graves, in undulating terrain. The church was located roughly in the centre of a square-shaped graveyard (TS076-043001-). It is mentioned in the Civil Survey (1654-6) (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 301) as 'the Church fenced with a ditch' but no visible trace survives above ground though its location is evidenced by a lack of headstones. According to the OS Letters the 'old Church of this Parish was demolished about twenty years ago [c. 1820], and the present Parish Church stands on its site, the whole of which is not occupied by it, the latter building being somewhat narrower than the old structure' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 138). Lewis (1837, 428) gives the precise date of 1821 for when the church, 'a neat edifice', was rebuilt with the grant of a loan of £800 from the Board of First Fruits. The early 19th-century church was demolished in the 1990s, leaving no visible trace above ground.

The Church in Newchapel is believed to have been built in the 17th century, likely by a local landowning family, though specific builders are not recorded. It is a small, modest structure, possibly dedicated to a common Christian saint, and its location on a raised, grave-filled site suggests it held some local religious and community significance.
This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
