Church in Kilbrannel

The church is mentioned in the Calendar of Christ Church deeds c. 1220 as 'Kilbrenin' and is referred to in the Papal Taxation records in 1302 and c. 1306 as 'Kylbrenyn and 'Kilbrenyng' respectively (Ó Cearbhaill 2007, 29). The church is not visible at ground level and could not be precisely located. The field behind Kilbrannel House, c. 270m SW of Ballinunty village, was known as the church field (Hassett 1990, 40).
