Childrens Burial Gd (Disused)

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Childrens Burial Gd (Disused) in County Cork, Ireland, is a disused burial ground where young lives ended before record-keepers arrived. The grassland still holds a raised subrectangular area, 14.5m long and 10.5m wide, with a half-metre scarp and numerous grave markers. On the 1842 OS 6-inch map it was already marked Children's Burial Ground, which means the community knew whose children lay there and set them apart. The place does not need invention; it needs witness.
Marked 'Children's Burial Ground' on OS 6-inch map (1842). In grassland. Raised subrectangular area (L 14.5m; Wth 10.5m) defined by scarp (H 0.5m). Numerous grave markers noted. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
