Chestnut Cottage

Terraced three-bay two-storey house, c.1800. Extensively renovated and extended, c.1990, comprising two-bay two-storey return to rear to south-west forming L-shaped plan. Gable-ended roof on an L-shaped. Replacement artificial slate, c.1990. Concrete ridge tiles. Rendered chimney stacks. Square rooflight to return. Replacement uPVC rainwater goods, c.1990. Rendered walls. Painted. Square-headed openings. Stone sills (concrete to return). Replacement timber casement windows, c.1990. Replacement tongue-and-groove timber panelled door, c.1960. This house is a modest-scale building that was possibly built as part of a scheme funded by the Rathmore House estate (the gateway to which is positioned directly opposite to north-east) – it is therefore of some social and historic interest. The asymmetrical quality of the front (north-east) elevation affords a vernacular quality to the scheme, and this is emphasised by the diminutive proportions of the window openings. The house, which is road fronted and continues the established roofline of the terrace, has been extensively renovated, with the loss of most of the original materials - the re-instatement of traditional-style materials might restore a more accurate approximation of the original appearance.
