Cave in Ballyvoe, passage in County Clare

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

What is recorded here

On a rise in gently undulating pastureland, within a relict field system (CL009-004001-) and a larger multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). Labelled 'Cave' in Gothic script on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map, and marked as a Man-made underground passage on Robinson's (1977) map. No visible trace of a Man-made underground passage is obvious but large limestone slabs and smaller stones are visible intermittently in an overgrown area (c. 6m x c. 6m) beside a pond. Several hollows (D c. 1m) noted were being used as badger sets.
