Castlepark House

Detached two-storey over basement country house, built c. 1800. Façade has recessed entrance bay with portico to front, flanked by pedimented ends having two-bay first floors and tripartite window arrangements to ground floors. Three-bay two-storey over half-basement side elevations. North bay of rear elevation projects slightly. Hipped slate roof, pitched to pedimented bays, with rendered chimneystacks, render eaves course, and having timber brackets to eaves. Rendered walls with cut limestone quoins and plinth course. Roughcast rendered walls to rear. Timber sliding sash windows throughout with limestone sills, round-headed to first floor of rear middle bay with margined six-over-four pane window having traceried top, square-headed elsewhere and having six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to first floor, nine-over-six pane to ground floor, tripartite windows being flanked by six-over-four pane sidelights. Replacement uPVC window to basement. Round-headed opening to rear with Y-tracery six-over-four pane margin timber sliding sash window, having render sill. Narrow six-over-four pane windows to south end of rear wall. Round-headed entrance doorway with carved timber panelled Ionic-style pilasters with limestone plinths, moulded archivolt, elaborate spoked timber fanlight and timber panelled door flanked by margined sidelights. Limestone threshold to entrance. Carved limestone prostyle tetrastyle Ionic portico, surmounted by stepped painted brick entablature with ball finial, and having flight of limestone steps. Square-profile rendered piers to road entrance, with wrought-iron vehicular gate.

Set in a mature landscape, Castlepark House is a fine example of a substantial late Georgian country house. The building incorporates a mid-eighteenth-century house at its core. The front elevation is particularly interesting having projecting end bays and a cut limestone portico to the recessed centre. The well-proportioned form of the house is articulated by the cut limestone quoins and plinth course. The classical theme culminates in the highly ornate and finely carved portico. The use of brick to the entablature is unusual and adds textural and chromatic interest. The portico frames the sizeable entrance with an ornate spoked fanlight. The carved timber surround to the entrance reflects the Ionic theme of the portico. The house retains a varierty of timber sash windows and the solidly-built outbuildings to the rear enhance the setting of the house.
