Castlelands House

Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1860, having gabled glazed porch addition to front (south-east) and recent extension to side (north-east). Pitched slate roof with rendered eaves course, chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Lined-and-ruled rendered walls with raised render quoins to front elevation. Camber-headed window openings with rendered sills, raised render block-and-start surrounds and eight-over-eight pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed fixed timber-framed windows to porch. Round-headed door opening with timber surround and archivolt to interior of porch, having timber panelled door with spoked fanlight. Roughcast rendered enclosing walls with render copings and square-profile capped gate piers with cast-iron gates.

This building's three-bay two-storey form, gable chimneystacks and round-headed central doorcase are typical of middle sized nineteenth century rural houses. It is a type which was once found throughout the countryside but is now increasingly rare or substantially altered. The retention of historic features including render detailings and timber sliding sash windows adds to its character and charm.
