No visible castle exists at Wingfield today, although a ruined castle appeared in the Civil Survey at Ballynabarney and local memory points to Ballynabarney or the lost grounds beside Wingfield House. The name comes from Cromwell manor, given to Sir Richard Wingfield in 1613 and renamed Wingfield in 1618. The house survived the 1640s, but the castle did not leave behind a clear shape, room or stone mark. It may have stood where the estate still keeps its name, hidden under lawns, fields or forgetting.

The manor of Cromwell was granted to Sir Richard Wingfield in 1613, but it was re-named Wingfield in a re-grant of 1618 (Loeber and Stouthamer-Loeber 1987, 188–9). The manor house (WX002-032----) survived the troubles of the 1640s, but a ruined castle is recorded in the Civil Survey (1654-56) at Ballynabarney (Simington 1953, 8). The location is not known, and there are no other references to the castle, but it may have been close to Wingfield House where a castle was reputedly destroyed in 1798.
