Five chains north of Castlemore moat, an Eustace castle vanished so completely that even its exact spot escaped memory. The family held the land through the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, yet no stone, trench or boundary marker survives to prove where their walls stood. Perhaps the castle was never grand, only a small fortified house swallowed by fields and time. Its total absence turns the known area into a puzzle, inviting imagination to fill the gap left by forgetting.

Orpen (1906, 376) suggests that there was a castle near the present Castlemore House which belonged to the Eustaces in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. He also adds (ibid., 379) following O'Donovan that "about five chains north of Castlemore moat is the site of an old castle which belonged to the Eustace family. None of it remains".
