What is recorded here

Callow Castle vanished before it was even named, leaving only a warning about the danger of trusting certainty. It may have stood as a small residence, fallen in 1641, and been forgotten so completely that no trace remains. What is certain is that it is gone, and what is missing is not a small gap but the whole shape of the story.

Exact location of Callow Castle, described in early 17th century as 'a sufficient residence' (Westropp 1906-7, 209), is not known. This castle was besieged and taken by General Purcell in July 1641 (Westropp 1907, 161). Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
