Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle in Ballyvolden appears on the Down Survey map of 1655-6, yet its exact location has vanished. A building large enough to mark on a royal survey should still leave a ridge, a broken wall or a field name behind it. Instead the castle withdrew into the land, leaving only a line on a drawing and a gap in the earth.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Castle shown close to the NW border of this townland on Down Survey (1655-6) map. The exact location of the castle is unknown.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
