Castle and bawn in Ardavullane, Rathkea and Shrough burned before the Civil Survey of 1654 to 1656, leaving a ruin that needed repair under Sr John Magrath of Allevollane. It still resists pinpointing, perhaps because the land kept more of the disaster than the words recorded.

According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) in ‘Ardanvollane', which was under the proprietorship of ‘Sr John Magrath of Allevollane Irish Papist’ in 1640, ‘Uppon the s[ai]d third p[ar]t colpe stands a burnt castle with a bawne wanting repayre' (Simington 1934, vol.2, 35). This castle and bawn (TS066-153002-) are unlocated within the townlands of Ardavullane, Rathkea and Shrough. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 22 Janurary 2013

Built or held by Sir John Magrath, an Irish Papist, in the mid-17th century; it is remembered as a burnt castle noted in the Civil Survey of 1654–5, reflecting the turmoil and land changes during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland.
