Castle

Castle, ringwork

What is recorded here

Shantraud still holds a ringwork castle, though no date or builder has emerged to give it life. The earth may have served as a boundary marker, a watch post, or a temporary shelter for people whose names vanished before writing reached them. Its absence from memory does not reduce the fact that a castle stood there, shaping the landscape and the choices of everyone who passed beside it.
The Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) is in the process of providing information on all monuments on The Historic Environment Viewer (HEV).
