What is recorded here

Frehans is a missing castle on a south-facing slope beside the River Tar in County Tipperary, recorded in 1654-6 as an old castle within an old bawne but now absent from the pasture above the water. It may have stood as a small defensive house, a boundary marker, or a local seat of power before decay, reuse, or deliberate destruction removed it. The land still holds the shape of what vanished, inviting imagination to complete what measurement cannot recover.

On a S-facing slope, c. 50m N of the River Tar, in gently undulating pasture. Indicated as a 'Castle' on the 1st ed. (1840) OS 6-inch map and as a 'Castle (site of)' on the 1904-05 edition. The monument is referred to in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'an old castle within an old Bawne' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 334).
