Castle in ruins

Only the lower walls of a poorly preserved castle survive at Cully. This fortification was an O' Molloy castle (Shaw 1971, 57). Described by Shaw (1971, 57) as 'the slight remains of Cully castle are on the right-hand side of Cully lane, about 250 yards from the main road. A headstone in Lynally over Constantine Molloy, of Cully, states he died in 1683'. Armorial stone (OF024-004002-) was taken from the castle to America in the 1930's (OHAS file). Described in 1974 by the Offaly Historical and Archaeological Society (OHAS) as the 'Original walls [of the castle] on the South and West about 1-2m high. The east wall is incorporated into a cottage (since destroyed). The original wall on the W side 12m long with extension N adding on another 3m' (OHAS file 1974). Built by the O'Molloy family, Castle Cully dates to the medieval period in Ireland. It is remembered as a historical site associated with the Gaelic dynasty that controlled much of the surrounding region before English expansion in the 17th century.
