Situated on a S-facing slope of rising ground in an upland area. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'the walls of a demolished castle' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 193). A nineteenth-century castellated house with a large bawn (TN037-013001-) of similar date now stands on the site. The bawn (wall T 0.6m; int. dims 82m N-S; 49m E-W) has angle towers and base-batter. There is evidence of dressed stone of seventeenth-century appearance used in the fabric of the castellated house which was probably built from the rubble of the original castle. No other visible remains of a pre-1700 castle in the area. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002).

Oakhampton HouseHouse · 1.4 mi

Explorer Tom Oakhampton House was built using so many cups of tea that the local lake might have dried up. Its driveway actually goes around an ancient ringfort, which is either genius or just really lazy planning. Keep your eyes open for any stone circles!

ClareviewCharter school · 1.8 mi

Explorer Tom Clareview looks like it would be the uncle at a wedding who brings his own chair and sits down without being invited. It used to be a school, then a barracks, so it’s seen some stuff. Keep your eyes open

Ballyhourigan WoodsForest · 3.3 mi

Explorer Tom Ballyhourigan Woods is secretly proud of one specific potato that grew in its soil and became a local legend for being rounder than usual. The trees guard this vegetable heritage like it’s a state secret involving gold and secrets. Pretend you're a lost aristocrat, nobody will check.

Slieve FelimMountain / peak · 3.5 miSlieve Felim WayWalking route · 3.5 miKeeper HillMountain / peak · 4.8 mi

Explorer Tom Keeper Hill is getting picked on by the wind because it stands right next to a particularly loud chimney stack. It keeps complaining about the noise, but nobody listens because it’s just a hill with no real authority whatsoever over the weather patterns. Best seen with a hangover and a sausage roll in hand.

Cath.Cathedral · 7.3 mi

Explorer Tom Cathedral in Shantraud is hiding its light under a very large bushel of mystery. The locals probably think the roof leaks because they forgot to pay the celestial plumber. It’s a proper spot for a flask of tea and a big, confused think about history.

TobermurraghHoly well · 7.7 mi

CastleCastle, motte and bailey · 7.8 mi

Explorer Tom The motte at Brittas is losing a rivalry with a more famous place because it got levelled by a farmer. Sit on a wall near it and pretend you're in a painting; nobody will mind if you drop your hat.

Explorer Tom Brian Boru Fort stands as a testament to ancient strength, where history and heritage intertwine in County Clare's heart.

Ballintotty Castle (in ruins)Castle, tower house · 14 mi

Explorer Tom Ballintotty Castle is having a massive fairy dispute over who gets to park their tiny chariot on the slope. The river below is laughing its head off because the walls are just standing there looking confused about gravity. Look up, the best bit is always higher than you think.
