Cairn

Cairn, unclassified

What is recorded here

Half a metre of grass and stone on Slieve Bawn's summit. The cross came later in 1950, planted above the old platform rather than replacing it. Badh may have owned the mountain before either marker existed, which means the cairn is not a boundary but a receipt: the hill still remembers being witnessed.
On the summit of Slieve Bawn, beneath a Holy Year cross which was erected in 1950. The name Slieve Bawn is derived from Siabh Baghda or Baghdna, and might have originated in the name of the Pagan war goddess Badh (Kelly 2006). It is described locally as a cairn which pre-dated the cross, it is visible as a grass-covered, flat-topped and stony platform (dims of base 8.4m E-W; 8m N-S; dims of top 5.5m NE-SW; 3.5m NW-SE; H 0.1-0.3m). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revised upload: 25 July 2016
