On W bank of Awbeg River, on main Cork-Limerick road. In 1234 David de Barry obtained licence for weekly market and annual fair 'at his town of Buttevant' (O'Brien 1993, 93); there are references to burgesses from end of 13th century (Thomas 1992, vol. 2, 28); by 1310 the de Barrys had obtained a murage grant (see 14632) for the town (ibid.). Exact area enclosed by town wall uncertain (see 14632). It had a 'linear' main street (Bradley 1985, 448) between bridge (14811) to N and castle (14330) to S and probably two cross-lanes located to N and S of Franciscan friary (14382); rental of 1364 mentions 'Main Street' and 'Mill Lane' (MacCotter and Nicholls 1996, 194). Unusually, parish church (14404) appears to lie outside line of town walls, to S of castle (14330) and within its demesne. Subsequently it declined and 'suffered considerable devastation' (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 1, 337) in 15th century. By 1831 it contained 204 houses and consisted 'principally of one main street extending along the mail coach road' (Lewis 1837, vol. 1, 235). Lombard's Castle (14340) fronts onto W side of Main Street; 18th-century market house (14761) at S end of Main Street. (Zajac et al. 1995, 10) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.

Coleman BrothersHouse · 16 yd

Explorer Tom Coleman Brothers has been a shop and pub since the late 1800s, which means the family probably hates each other by now. The timber counters look like they’ve seen secrets that would make you blush. Bring a friend who talks too much to fill the silence.

Town defences in ButtevantTown defences · 49 yd

Explorer Tom Town defences in Buttevant are mostly gone, but records suggest rectangular circuits enclosing 5 to 15 hectares. Nothing visible remains now, just the memory of a North Gate from 1375. A bit of a mystery spot.

cobbles/flags/paving/kerbing52 yd

Explorer Tom Cobbles in Buttevant are limestone kerbing and paving from around 1900 that form part of the historic streetscape. There are painted cast-iron water hydrants with acorn finials that add a bit of color and mid-nineteenth-century interest. The drains are an interesting technical solution to keeping the town dry.

Lombards CastleCastle, tower house · 172 yd

Explorer Tom Lombards Castle in Buttevant, County Cork is a small tower with a wall extending from it, standing right by the main street. It’s got a lintelled chamber and slit windows. Very modest for a castle, don’t you think?

Sycamore332 yd

Explorer Tom This Sycamore in County Cork would survive a zombie attack by just standing very still and hoping they forget it exists. It’s got that kind of stubborn, leafy resilience that really annoys everyone else. Ideal spot for making a dramatic phone call to your mate.

David HurleyMemorial · 333 yd

Explorer Tom David Hurley is a memorial that probably bragged about surviving a storm that never actually happened. It’s just standing there looking dignified while I try to figure out who he was before I got lost. It's the kind of place that makes a dull Tuesday interesting.

Buttevant Castle (in Ruins)Castle · 434 yd

Explorer Tom Buttevant Castle in County Cork is sitting there looking smug. Two local families used to fight over who could see the best view from the top, and one threw a shoe at the other. It landed on a goat, which then ate their prize-winning pumpkin. Pop by and tell it it's looking well.

Charles BunworthMemorial · 531 yd

Explorer Tom Charles Bunworth Memorial in County Cork is having a bit of a spat with the nearest tree, probably over whose shadow looks better. It’s all drama and dignity, which is very inconvenient when you just want to take a quick photo. Leave nothing but footprints and a bad pun.

TowerDovecote · 1448 yd

Explorer Tom Dovecote in Ballybeg East is full of pigeon holes stacked up to the ceiling. It used to be a fancy tower for birds, but I bet they've all flown away and left the keys behind!

Smith's WellSpring · 3.4 mi

Explorer Tom Smith's Well was nearly sold for a horse last year when a farmer mistook its bubbling sound for a colt calling out in the night. He almost dragged it off on a cart, honestly, grand place for a sulk or a snog, your call while you wait for the paperwork to sort itself out.

Doneraile HouseHeritage attraction · 3.8 mi

Explorer Tom Doneraile House in County Cork was built by someone who was definitely thinking about the wallpaper more than the structural integrity of the whole thing. It looks like a fancy house that got left outside in the rain for too long. Pretend you're a lost aristocrat, nobody will check your credentials.

European Yew3.9 mi

Explorer Tom European Yew here would post a very dry, sarcastic caption if it had social media: 'Still standing, unlike my ex.' It's got that unbothered energy down to an art form. Bring sandwiches, the gulls will think you're feeding them.
