Burnt pit in Grange (east Muskerry By.)

This burnt pit was excavated in 2003 in advance of the construction of a large housing development in two fields on the S bank of the Bride River. The circular pit (diam. 1.2m; D 0.42m), which had been truncated by ploughing, occurred in the SW part of the E field. It was filled with dark-brown charcoal-rich soil. At its centre, at a depth of c. 0.28m, there was a circular area (diam. c. 0.78m) with concentrations of red burnt clay and charcoal, possibly indicating in situ burning. Another burnt pit (CO073-147002-) was located c. 200m to the NW. The excavation also revealed a number of pits (CO073-147----) widely spaced throughout both fields.
