What is recorded here

Situated at the bottom of a SE-facing slope with a slight rise to the E. Archaeological monitoring (03E1761) over a wide area W and N of Lough Errew identified numerous archaeological features that could be preserved in situ, including this spread of burn mound material. It consists of a circular spread of heat-shattered stone and charcoal enriched soil (diam. 10m N-S; 10m E-W). (Read 2004, 12, No. 21) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 8 January 2020
A burnt mound; date and cultural affiliation uncertain, but likely Bronze Age in origin. Burnt mounds are commonly associated with domestic or ritual activities, though their exact function remains debated.
