Burnt mound in Grallagh (costello By.)

In pasture, in a small stand of conifers, adjacent to a spring. The remains consist of a low, roughly circular mound (diam. c. 10-2m). Two heaps (diam. 2-3.5m; H 0.5-0.6m) of shattered stone and black soil, set 2m apart, sit on top of the mound, possibly the result of disturbance during the planting of conifer trees which are growing on the mound. The mound is clipped at WNW by a field drain, in the section face of which heat-shattered stone in charcoal-rich soil is visible. A tumbled field wall overlies the SE edge of the mound.
