Burial Ground (Site of)

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Ardgroom harbour water laps at the base of the slope where children were laid to rest. The triangular field holds no marked graves, only a flat embedded stone and ferns shifting in the sea wind. Local people still call it a cillíneach, keeping the small dead separate from the ordinary memory of the town.
In undulating pasture, on a N-facing slope overlooking Ardgroom Harbour to the SW. This burial ground comprises a roughly triangular-shaped field (L c. 40m N-S; Wth c. 25m), narrowing towards the N, which has an uneven surface and is partly covered with ferns. No grave-markers or grave mounds were noted, apart from a flat embedded stone towards the centre of the burial ground. This burial ground is known locally as a 'cillíneach'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
