Burial ground

What is recorded here

Burial Ground in County Cork, Ireland, holds many headstones dating to the 1940s and remains active beside a concrete-walled site that once sat north of a demolished church. The earth has kept naming people and marking loss since at least the mid-twentieth century, while the changed boundary suggests the community kept giving the dead room to remain recognised.
Not shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map; shown on 1904 OS 6-inch map as square area (60m x c. 60m) to N of RC church (demolished 1920s); as rectangular area (c. 100m N-S; c. 60m E-W) extended S into church site on 1937 OS 6-inch map. Concrete wall encloses site on E, S, and W sides; field fence on N side. Many headstones dating to 1940s noted. Still in use. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
