Burial ground in Ovenstown

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Ovenstown in County Kilkenny is called a burial ground although no exact spot remains visible. Carrigan wrote in 1905 that a field named Rillig on Mr. Drennan’s farm held a very ancient graveyard whose history was entirely unknown. The place may still lie beneath ordinary soil, waiting for someone to stop walking and listen for the dead.
According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 371), ‘On Mr. Drennan’s farm in Ovenstown there is a field called “Rillig,” in which there is a very ancient graveyard. Its history is entirely unknown’. There is no burial ground indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map or on the 1947 revision. The location of this burial ground in Ovenstown townland is unknown.
